First Dental Experience

Fun Treatment Room
Your child's first dental experience should be a positive, stress-free one! The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a dental exam within six months of the eruption of the first tooth and no later than the child's first birthday. At this checkup we can evaluate the oral cavity for tooth decay or other problems, and demonstrate how to properly care for your child's teeth.

When your child is ready for their first dental appointment, we will perform a thorough oral exam, review the health history and address any concerns you may have. Morning appointments, when you child is fully rested, are usually better for their first dental visit. We want this to be a positive experience for you and your child.

We ask that you do not use any words that might create fear in your child (hurt, drill, shot, needle) and stay calm and relaxed, as any anxiety on your part will be sensed by your child. Let your child know that we will "count" their teeth and maybe even "take a picture" of their teeth.

Why a Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric dentists have two to three years of specialized training following dental school and treat children only, infancy through their teenage years. Our doctors are specially trained to ensure that early dental experiences help your child build confidence and knowledge, setting a great precedent for their future dental health. The very young, preteens, and teens all need different approaches in dealing with their behavior, guiding their dental growth and development, and helping them avoid future dental problems. The pediatric dentist is best qualified to meet these needs.

Basic & Advanced Behavior Management Techniques

Whenever possible, basic behavior management techniques are employed to ensure the safety of your child. Pediatric Dentists are also specially trained in the following advanced management techniques:

Nitrous oxide (N2O) or laughing gas, is colorless, sweet-smelling, and nonirritating and when administered will create a state of mild sedation. This technique is advantageous for those patients that experience mild anxiety and fear when visiting the dentist.  This technique's use is dependent upon the level of anxiety of the patient.

Our doctors may recommend the use of sedation for:
  • fearful or anxious children for whom basic behavior guidance techniques have not been successful
  • children who cannot cooperate due to lack of psychological or emotional maturity, or disability
  • children who are in need of extensive dental treatment and/or surgery
  • children for whom the use of sedation may protect the developing psyche and/or reduce medical risk

Our doctors have been specially trained in the use of various sedation techniques and follow the strictest monitoring guidelines to provide safe and effective treatment for your child. Deep sedation and treatment under general anesthesia are also available.
